Dolce and Gobanna's latest campaign has been stripped from Chinese media after an uproar from critics after complaints of 'rasicm'. The Italian fashion house has launched a new campaign in preparation for its fashion show in Shanghai, which was meant to take place yesterday, on Wednesday 21st November.
A series of 3 video's were posted on Chinese social media site, Weibo, as well as Instagram and Twitter on Monday. The video's show a Chinese model attempting to eat Italian food with chopsticks. It was taken down after less than 24 hours, but has been widely shared across social media platforms and Instagram.

Even though this is meant to be D&G paying homage to China and their culture, I think this is very superficial and shows china in a very stereotypical way. Its crazy how a brand as big as D&G can be so superficial about one of their biggest markets in the world. Everything is so stereotypical from the backgrounds with lanterns and dragons in to the music in the background. This is making China out to be very old fashioned country and not with the times, when really it is much more modern than many European cities. It also degrades these people, making Chinese out to be dumb and not knowing how to use chopsticks. Especially in

the video showing the model attempting to eat Spaghetti Bolognese - which is very similar to noodles??!! I think the biggest problem is the lack of openness to other ways of thinking, of being, and non- European cultures.
When I watched these ad campaigns I couldn't help but think about the huge number of people who were involved with the production of this - from writing it to production to posting it on social media and no one noticed or seemed to question it!
It makes me question whether they did this to spark controversy and talk within the fashion community - to promote their show in Shanghai - not expecting such huge uproar.

This clearly back fired on Dolce and Gobanna after racist messages from Stefano Gabbana got exposed by @diet_prada on instagram. The pair are well known for their controversial thoughts but this time they appear to have crossed the line. Stefano states that the ad was a tribute to China and then goes on to say 'The country of *faeces emoji's* is China...'. Later he went on to saying that it was not him who sent those messages and he had been hacked. Sparking even more controversy for the pair of designers.
The show on Wednesday night got cancelled. The full asian model line up pulled out with many Agency's not wanting to work with Dolce & Gabbana because of their latest ads. Videos have also been post on social media of individuals burning D&G clothing and store workers refusing to sell their products. So what will be next?
According to Bain & Company’s latest report on the luxury market, Chinese consumers account for an estimated 33 percent of global luxury goods spend, showing Chinese support can make or break a brand's performance. The Chinese market is so important to them then why have they gone and insulted them like this? I am very interested to see where this lands the brand and if the Chinese will be willing to forgive them anytime soon or if this is their reputation damaged forever.
